Typical Data Problems

The most common data recovery involves OS failure (on a single-disk, single-OS system), that means copying all wanted files to another disk. Move the files from the system disk to the backup media with a file manager or disc authoring software.  Consider storing valuable data files (or copies of them) on a different partition from the replaceable OS system files, this saves all the necessary data from being damaged completely and provides extra protection.

In case of disk- level failure, disk partition or hard disk failure, the data cannot be easily read. The methods to improve the situation can be: repairing the file system, partition table or master boot record. Hard disk recovery techniques can also help to solve the problem – the corrupted data may be recovered by means of software repair programs, in some cases, however, only hardware replacement of a physically damaged disk can help. Recovering data from physically-damaged hardware can demand using several techniques, for instance, replacing parts in the hard disk can make the disk usable.  A specialized disk-imaging process recovers every readable bit from the surface in case of logical damage.

One more typical problem occurs when files have been deleted from a storage place. Deleted files do not disappear immediately- only references to them in the directory structure are erased. The original files may be restored with the help of some programs.
